Following a second stadholderless period of 45 years, William IV, Prince of Orange, comes to power. Under him and his son and successor, William V, the economy stagnates and there is a growing gulf between the impoverished masses and the ruling elite ('regents'), who flaunt their wealth. There is growing opposition to the ruling class from a new political movement (the 'Patriots').
